Wild Horses

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of visiting my friend upstate who invited me to go horse back ridding, and gardening, and all things that us city kids need to do on occasion to get a little country side relaxation.  It was such a treat because I haven't been around horses much since I left home in Santa Ynez, where they were pretty much everywhere you looked.  Now I live a city life and really miss those days of sunshine and nature adventures.  This was the perfect mix of outdoors, hanging with some kids, as well as a newborn horse, which was one of the best parts!  That little guys name is Freckle and he took a liking to me, so I had to get some shots of his fresh little face.  Between, the horse, the kids, and the dog, I really got to kick off my shoes and get my relax on, while also getting to shoot some really nice pics of my trip!

P.S.  Be sure to check out my friends event space located in the heart of Manhattan if you are looking for a great place to throw a party, have a wedding, or whatever else you can dream up!

Katherine+Pitr Real Wedding

I just wrapped up the edit for this wedding and wanted to share a few of my selects from Katherine and Pitr's upstate NY wedding.  We couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day and the real treat was the beautiful pops of color that came from the brides maids dresses.  This was a true DIY wedding, and their personal style really comes thru in these kind of details.  It's nice to see a bridal party that is wearing all different colors and adding a real sense of celebration to the day!  The bride looked beautiful in her vintage style dress with a lily pinned to her side swept hair! Congrats!

Gary+Nicole

Good Morning Lovers! Young love is in full effect this spring, and this is the latest installment from Brooklyn!  Gary and Nicole wanted to meet up in Dumbo, so we walked all around and shot a bit at the carrousel of course, but I also wanted to make sure we got some of the flowers that are blooming all over the city! I love yellow, and wanted to make sure that the forsythia made it into our shoot, since it is the official flower of Brooklyn!

Tomatillos

Living in NY brings together people from all around the world.  We are smashed up against each other, and avoid eye contact, put our headphones on, and hope that no one bothers us on our way home from where ever we are all coming.  That means that when we get the chance to connect with a stranger, there is a little moment of magic, and can shed light on things that our NY filters keep us from seeing sometimes.  This weekend, it was a chance encounter with a Ukrainian woman at the market, who asked me how I was going to prepare the tomatillos that I was selecting by the handful.  We chatted for about 10 minutes in the market over recipes and stories of how we arrived in NY.  She smiled and laughed deeply and made me happy to share ideas about cuisine from around the globe.  This conversation got me thinking about so many things regarding food, and about how there are so many kinds of foods that many people may not be aware of. My mother is from Guatemala, and she loves tomatillos, which in Spanish, just means little tomato.  I'm also from California, where Mexican food is prevalent, and salsa verde is a staple condiment.  Tomatillos are beautiful little fruits that are encased in a very delicate paper like shell, and it occurred to me that it would be a beautiful subject to photograph.  I love cooking, and making images, but I rarely combine the two.  This will be the first installment of more to come.  Also, I'm not good at giving recipes, because I eyeball everything, and just keep trying until it works, which is why these posts will include instructions, not recipes.

Instructions:
roast
tomatillos
white onion
garlic
jalapeno
in oven for 30 min.

blend together with fresh cilantro
lime juice
sea salt

enjoy!

Doug+Perry

This lovely pair have been together for 25 years, and are finally able to make their union legal and celebrated here in NYC.  I felt really honored to be a part of their day while celebrating at the Russian Tea Room with a few of their closest friends.
It was a treat shooting there with such a great color palette to set off their Dashiki wardrobe.

Cynthia Addai-Robinson from Spartacus

One to watch: Cynthia Addai-Robinson is starring in this season's Spartacus which airs on Starz.  I had the pleasure of working with her on her way back from shooting in Australia.  We shot in my home studio here in NY.  Congrats on a great role!
